transported to another zoo for mating purposes.
The creature, named Bantu, was given the sedative last night as vets prepared to
transfer him to a different city in Mexicoto mate with two females. However, before they could set off on the trip, the 24-year-old gorilla suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest and passed away, officials said. Frantic efforts to resuscitate him failed, Mexico City's environment department said in a statement, citing a preliminary autopsy.  Bantu, who was a major attraction at the capital's Chapultepec zoo , was supposed  to have been taken to a facility in
Guadalajara, 340 miles away.
There, it was hoped he would mate with two females. Around 20 vets and experts are believed transportation efforts - which tragically ended in the gorilla's death, AFP reports.
Tests are now under way to confirm the  cause of Bantu's passing - while employees at Chapultepec are said to be greatly distressed by the incident.
"This incident has caused great consternation among zoo personnel who cared for him for nearly 25 years," said the environment department's statement. It added that international veterinary
protocols had been followed in the incident. Today, people were taking to social media
to express their sadness at Bantu's death, with one Instagram user saying he had 'no words'.
The man wrote: "Bantu, the beautiful 25 year old Gorilla (They live up to 40 years) from the zoo of Chapultepec in Mexico City, died from a Heart attack undertake effects of the anesthesia when they were trying to move him to a zoo in the city of Guadalajara.
"No words for this tragic loss..."
The animal's death comes less than two months after a gorilla was shot dead at Cincinnati Zoo in Ohio, US, after a three-year-old boy entered his enclosure.
The silverback, called Harambe, was gunned down by zoo employees after  to have been involved in the grabbing the boy and dragging him quickly across a moat at the facility.
The shooting sparked outrage across the world after footage emerged of the creature wrapping his arms around the youngster in an apparent bid to protect him.
Ape expert Dr Emily Bethell, a senior lecturer in Primate Behaviour at Liverpool John Moores University, told the Mirror Online that Harambe's body language showed he was not threatening the child . Dr Bethell said: “He was clearly being protective towards the boy.
“There were no signs of the gorilla being aggressive in the sense that he wanted to hurt the boy or anything like that."
However, the zoo's director defended his employees' actions, saying they made the
right decision in shooting dead the animal and that the child was in danger.

MASSOB faults Buhari on Nigeria’s non- negotiable

Awka—THE Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, yesterday faulted
President Muhammadu Buhari’s
insistence that Nigeria’s unity is not
negotiable, arguing that the President’s
view showed that he has not realized
that a new trend of resolving such
issues had taken over.
The President, while having an audience with
some people who paid him sallah homage at
the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, quoted former
head of state, General Yakubu Gowon’s stand during the Nigeria-Biafra war that the task of
keeping Nigeria as one united entity is a task that must be accomplished.
Reacting on the President’s statement, MASSOB leader, Chief Uchenna Madu said the Movement totally disagreed with the President, describing his statement as the thoughts of somebody who still believed in old ways of doing things.
He said: “The President, in his inner sense of reasoning, believes that he will easily crush Biafra, maybe with his intimidating tendencies over Igbo governors, National Assembly members, religious/ opinion/ political leaders. MASSOB views the President’s constant negative comments on Biafra consciousness as a sign of his jitteriness.“As every revolutionary struggle has its own methodology, the current Biafran struggle foractualization and restoration will continue to unfold confusing methods to the President.
The involvement of Niger Delta Avengers and other Niger Delta freedom fighters in the
Biafra struggle will continue to hunt those opposed to the actualization of Biafra.”
Madu said some of the decisions of the present administration in Nigeria were even assisting and justifying the struggle for the Biafra Republic, adding that the consciousness of Christians in the southern part and Middle Belt of the country had been reawakened.
He boasted that no man can crush Biafra because, according to him, God, history and humanity were on the side of the agitators.reawakened.

Lionel Messi and his father sentenced to suspended 21- month prison.

Lionel Messi and his father Jorge have been sentenced to 21 months in prison after a court in Barcelona found him guilty of three counts of tax fraud.
The sentence can be appealed through the Spanish supreme court, a statement from
the court said. It is unlikely Messi or his father will not serve a stretch behind bars, however. Under Spanish law, a prison sentence under two years can be served under probation if you have no prior criminal record. The court ordered Messi to pay a fine of around 2 million euros (£1.7million) and
his father to pay 1.5 million euros (£1.3million).

Ogah planning to kidnap judicial officers, Ikpeazu alleges

The Federal Government, yesterday, distanced itself from the governorship crisis currently rocking Abia State. This came as Governor Okezie Ikpeazu alleged that there was a plot by "desparate politicians" to kidnap judicial officers in Abia State to swear-in Dr. Uche Ogah, who was issued a certificate of return last week by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. But Uche Ogah said the fight to swear him in as governor of Abia State was still on and expressed hope that God would see him through. However, the Federal Government, through the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice,Abubakar Malami, SAN, said it never influenced the INEC to issue certificate of return to Ogah. The AGF, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Salihu Isah, urged all the parties involved in the governorship tussle to await the “decision of the courts” on the matter. Malami maintained that so far, nobody had approached him to proffer any legal opinion on the crisis. He said: “The attention of the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice has been drawn to the insinuations and crass lies being peddled and disseminated by a cross- section of Nigerians and the various media platforms that the Honorable Attorney General of the Federation is behind the legal logjam over the Abia State governorship seat and wishes to clarify that those canvassing this position have no basis to do so. “Of particular concern are those who have peddled ill-natured rumours with a view to misinforming our discerning populace that it was the Attorney General of the Federation and by extension, the Federal Government of Nigeria, which gave directives to the  Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to issue Certificate of Return to Dr. Uchechukwu Ogah declaring him governor-elect.“He has definitely not taken any action either by spoken words or body language as far as this Abia governorship crisis is concerned. “I wish to, therefore, on behalf of my principal, declare that these rumors are untrue and a figment of the imagination of those pushing these selfish, shameless and irredeemable lies into public space which only translates to partisanship on the side of its Purveyors.“As far as the Attorney General of the Federation is concerned, the constitutional powers for the legal opinion of his office have not been invoked on this issue. “So far, nobody has approached him to proffer any legal opinion to it. As a strong believer in the rule of law, it is his belief that the law should naturally take its course .“The Honourable Attorney General of the Federation will not be dragged into this controversy and mind-games being played out by the various legal mindsand spin doctors of both camps at this point.“The parties involved should await the  decision of the courts. “In fact, we wish to, by this statement, advise those in the habit of dragging the highly esteemed Office of the Attorney  General of the Federation and Minister of Justice into knotty issue of this kind even when it is yet to take a position. They should desist from these unwarranted presumptions henceforth.” Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Abuja had on June 27, sacked Governor Ikpeazu of Abia State from office over alleged tax fraud. Aside ordering him to immediately vacate his office, the court further directed INEC to issue a fresh certificate of return to Dr. Ogah, who came second  in the primary election of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, that produced Ikpeazu. Though INEC had since issued certificate of return to Ogah, another court in Abia State, however, restrained the Chief Judge from swearing him in. Plot to kidnap judge Meanwhile, Governor Ikpeazu has alleged that there was a “plot to kidnap judicial officers in Abia State” to swear-in Ogah. Ikpeazu’s allegation came on the heels of the position of Ogah that the refusal of the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Theresa Uzokwe, to swear him in as the duly elected governor of the state was an affront on the rule of law. I never absconded from office —CJ But the judge has said that she neverabsconded from duty to avoid swearing in of Ogah as governor of Abia State, insisting that she was in office on Thursday, June 30, 2016, till 4.30 pm. A statement by the Acting Chief Registrar, Abia State Judiciary, Mrs.Vicky Analaba, said: “The attention of the Chief Judge of Abia State, Justice Theresa Uzoamaka Uzokwe, has been drawn to various spurious and mischievous reports alleging that the Chief Judge absconded from her duty post on Thursday, June 30, 2016, to avoid swearing in Uche Ogah as Governor of Abia State. “ Contrary to the allegations of cowardice by mischievous politicians, the Chief Judge, was in her office throughout the working hours on Thursday, June 30,2016 from 8:30 a.m. till 4:30 p.m.
“For the avoidance of doubt, on Thursday, June 30, 2016, the Chief Judge was in her court room performing her lawful duties, including the delivery of four rulings on that date. “The particulars of the ruling in question are: HU/35CM/2015 Francis Akor vs the State; HU/ICM/2016-Johnson Asiegbu vs. Commissioner of Police, HU/42CM/2016-Onyekachi Samuel vs. Commissioner of Police; HU/34CM/2016-Lucky Sampson vs. the State.
“These facts are verifiable and in the records of the court. The various lawyers who appeared in the respective suits listed above are also living witnesses.
“This press release has become necessary in order to avoid further mischief and to set the records straight.” Raising the kidnap alarm, Ikpeazu in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Enyinnaya Appolos said: “The state government has uncovered plots by desperate politicians to kidnap judicial officers in the state. “We call on security agencies in the state to increase surveillance and protection services around all judicial officers in the state.
“We wish to warn those involved in this plot to desist from their nefarious activities as the government will not hesitate to apply the full weight of the law against them. “We also call on Abians to be vigilant and report any suspicious movements around them to the security.” Ogah had accused the Chief Judge of Abia State, Justice Theresa Uzokwe of constituting “an affront on the rule of law” by refusing to swear him in as duly- elected governor of the state,” saying the action was capable of undermining the peace and stability of the state. According to him, the stay of execution of order secured from an Abia High Court in Osisioma has no force of law as the court has coordinate jurisdiction with a Federal High Court.
“A High Court in Abia is a court of coordinate jurisdiction with a Federal High Court and so any order given by such court to contradict an earlier order of the same court is ipso facto null and void. It is only a higher court that has the legal capacity to reverse the earlier order or judgment,” Ogah was quoted as saying through his Special Adviser on Public Communications, Monday Ubani. Abia PDP accuses Ogah of nursing unbridled ambition On its own, Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has accused Ogah of nursing “unbridled ambition” and alleged that he was plotting to kidnap judicial officers to swear him in as governor of Abia State. A statement by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Chief Don Ubani, stated: “The Peoples’ Democratic Party in Abia State has frowned on the reports making round in the state that a certain desperate politician in the state, whose illegal efforts to seize power from the back door which has been frustrated by decent application of the rule of law, is now directing his evil machination towards kidnapping judicial officers in the state with the hope of intimidatingthem in order to have access to power that he did not canvass for.“The party has equally taken cognizanceof the inordinately ambitious politician’s plot to kidnap some top functionaries of the party in the state. According to intelligence available to the party, the political desperado is embittered with the state executive of the party for not coming out to support his acts of illegality.
“The party, therefore, cautions the politician that is involved in this sacrilegious and bloody shenanigan to quickly retrace his nefarious steps as the likely consequences of his devious  desires and mischievous plots would compound his imagination and would only leave him with regrets that may not be redressed or even corrected in his life time. “The party wishes to remind him that he who throws stones into a crowded market should not forget that his loved ones could end up being the victims of his action.”
The fight is still on —Ogah But speaking, yesterday, on developments in the state, Ogah said the fight to swear him in as governor was still on. Ogah said he was hopeful that God would see him through the fight, adding that this was not the time to talk much.

Mikel set to leave Chelsea unless Conte offers him first-team football

EXCLUSIVE: Mikel set to leave Chelsea unless Conte offers him first-team football

The Nigeria international has spoken to the inbound Blues boss but is yet to receive assurances about his playing time ahead of the new season.

John Obi Mikel could be set to leave Chelsea this summer in pursuit of regular first-team football, Goal understands.
The midfielder, who has been with the Blues since 2006, has just one-year remaining on his current deal and is yet to receive assurances about his playing time ahead of the new season.
Goal understands Mikel has spoken to inbound Chelsea boss Antonio Conte and is prepared to hold off a move away until he holds further discussions with the manager when Italy's Euro 2016 campaign ends.
However, Mikel - who would be keen to stay at Chelsea - is considering alternative options in case Conte does not offer him what he wants.
Chelsea have a policy of only offering one-year extensions to players over 30 which means it is in the 29-year-old's interest to renew his contract this summer to secure a longer deal.

Lots of marriages fail these days as a result of the unrealistic goals and expectations that couples set before marriage. Many people venture into marriage for the wrong reasons; some cannot even say why they are in it.

Some of them feel the need to get married because their mates are doing it and they want the man they would end up with to fit some fictional characters in their heads. These wrong choices or criteria often make them fall into the wrong hands and ruin their chances of being happy.

Find below some of the weird things ladies check in men before marrying them;
1. Height

This is the first thing a woman is likely to say when you ask her about the things she desires in a man. Every woman wants men that are tall. No one wants a short man.

Some women would even say they cannot date men that are taller than they. Thus, when they meet men who are tall and have one or two traits that fit their vague qualities, they tune in and fall in love with them.
2. Well-furnished apartment

Ladies do not want to settle for less now when they are planning for marriage. Every woman wants a man who is successful and has different properties to show with it. Men who have their own houses are presumed to be better than men who don’t.

These houses have to be furnished to taste and classy for the women to fit into them. If a man does not have this or something close enough, some women would not agree to marry them.
3. Wealth

Every woman wants a man that can see to her financial needs. Money is important to a lot of women out there and they would not settle down with men who are struggling financially.

Men who cannot meet their needs may not even make the list of suitors they would be considering. It does not matter whether the man has some hidden demons as long as he has enough money in his account.
4. Cars

Now, it would amaze you to discover that some ladies would not date men who do not have a car. As soon as you approach them on with your ‘leggedbenz’ and they do not see you holding a car key, it is a no-no.

Some ladies love comfort and would not trade anything for it. Before you stand a chance to talk to them at all, your appearance has to speak a ton about you.
5. Romance

Some ladies simply love it when they meet guys who are romantic; they love men who would read lines of poems to them and make them feel like princesses. They enjoy the attention they get from men like these and would immediately fall for their gentle and romantic gestures.

As far as some of these women are concerned, the men’s ability to show love and care while being romantic is more than enough.
6. Citizenship

As soon as some ladies get to know the guys asking them out are not Nigerians or they have dual citizenship, love happens. Ladies love the concept of marrying foreigners or men who would give them the fair chance of stepping outside the shores of this country.

You would be shocked to discover that some ladies would be willing to marry some men as soon as they know they have passports to other countries.
7. Presence of six packs

Women certainly love men who are physically fit; they believe guys that are well-built are manly and would be able to perform better than men who are not. The presence of six packs would make some of the ladies melt and get wet on the spot. They would always choose a man with a firm body over a man with a pot belly.
8. Sexual performance

Women no doubt love men whose strength in bed can be likened to that of a stallion; they love men who can drive them to different peaks of desire when it comes to sexual activities.

Knowing fully well that many women end up cheating in marriage as a result of sex, they would rather go for men who would make them go wild with desire and leave their bodies limp after being satisfied.
9. Occupation

Many ladies want to get married to men who have good jobs. They will always ask about the men’s place of work within the first few minutes they meet and would use the details to map out their plans about them. Men who work in oil and gas companies are seen as better suitors as compared to those who teach.

President Obama brands Donald Trump as 'dangerous' and 'un-American'

U.S. President Barack Obama speaks about the worst mass shooting in U.S. history that took place in Orlando, Florida, at the White House in Washington, U.S., June 12, 2016.Reuters

President Obama: He's not happy.Alex Wong/ Getty Images
An emotional President Obama took the gloves off against Donald Trump in the wake of the Orlando shootings on 12 June, calling the candidate un-American and dangerous in a speech delivered on Tuesday (14 June) before members of the US Department of The Treasury.Obama let loose after Trump insinuated that a mysterious link exists between the president and terrorism, telling Fox News: "There is something going on." Trump has often implied that Obama is Muslim
Trump has also repeatedly bashed the president for his failure to use the exact phrase "radical Islamic terrorism."
Obama said that Trump's call for a ban on Muslim immigrants — plus any immigrants from world terror hotspots — and the wedge he drives between Americans makes the nation more dangerous, noted NBC.
"Where does this stop?" Obama asked in remarks in a speech delivered before members of the Treasury Department. "Are we going to start treating all Muslim Americans differently? Place them under special surveillance? Discriminate against them because of their faith? That's not the America we want. It doesn't reflect our ideals."
Obama warned that if the US abandons its core values of tolerance, "we would not only make it a lot easier to radicalise people here and around the world, but we would have betrayed the very things we are trying to protect."

He hammered Trump over his "dangerous" mindset and "loose talk and sloppiness," and indicated that Trump's remarks were driving Muslims, who might be vulnerable to radicalisation, into the arms of the Islamic State (Isis).

"If we fall into the trap of painting all Muslims with a broad brush we are doing the terrorists' work for them," Obama said. And he finally let Trump have a sucker punch, over the candidate's insistence that Obama use the phrase "radical Islamic terrorism."
"What exactly would using this label accomplish? What exactly would it change?" Obama asked. "Would it make ISIL less committed to try and kill Americans?" he continued, using a different acronym for ISIS.
"Would it bring in more allies? Is there a military strategy that is served by this? The answer is none of the above," he said. "Calling a threat by a different name does not make it go away."
He added: "There's no magic to the phrase radical Islam. It's a political talking point. The reason I am careful has nothing to do with political correctness and everything to do with defeating extremism."

Trump blasted back during a speech in North Carolina, complaining that Obama was "angrier at me" than at the Orlando shooter. He also issued a statement to Associated Press that the president "continues to prioritise our enemy over our allies, and for that matter, the American people."
Trump was roundly criticised by many after he accepted "congratulations" for being "right" about terrorism in the wake of the Orland massacre. Many in the GOP leadership have remained silent on his remarks — or criticised them, reports NBC.
"I'm not hopeful right now," said Arizona's Republican Senator Jeff Flake, who has refused to endorse Trump. Trump's "ill-informed, ill-conceived ban on Muslims" is damaging the Republican Party, he said.
Trump's statement after the Orlando massacre "wasn't the kind of response that I would expect when 50 people have perished," said Tennessee Republican Senator Bob Corker. "I've offered words of public encouragement [to Trump] in important times and continue to be discouraged by the results."

Bodies of 42 fishermen butchered by Boko Haram pulled from Lake Chad

"Cameroonian sailors and villagers... saw several bodies floating on the water and immediately alerted security forces," Cololenl Nomo Jean Claude told the African news website the Daily Sabah. "We recovered 42 bodies from the water between Saturday and Sunday. After identification, we found they were of Cameroonian, Nigerian and Chadian nationality. The bodies were immediately handed over to the families for burial."
Boko Haram has fought a seven-year battle to form an Islamist caliphate in the region in which around 20,000 people have been killed and 2.7 million people displaced. Around 50,000 have been displaced in south eastern Niger in the last few days due to an onslaught by the group, according to Fox News.
This has prompted a doubling of food aid to southern Niger, the United Nations' World Food Program (WFP) announced on Tuesday (14 June). "Many people have walked from 10 km to 40 kms (6 to 25 miles)," said WFP Niger deputy country director Belkacem Machane in a statement published by Reuters.
"They are arriving in a state of shock, and urgently need food, shelter, water – assistance with their most basic needs. They have now reached the end of their rope."
Niger, Chad, Benin and Cameroon have all joined an international task-force to fight the insurgents, but often ordinary civilians are the ones who suffer most. BokoHaram has bombed many mosques, transport hubs and even refugee centres, as well as snatching over 200 schoolgirls from Chibok and selling them into slavery.
In March (2016) Cameroon announced the death penalty for 89 members of Boko Haram, a decision dismissed as counter-productive by anti-terrorism experts.

UNN, Enugu Campus shut down over students’ violent protest

University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, UNEC, has been shut down indefinitely following students’ unrest in the institution. UNN It was gathered that students of the university staged a protest last Monday over epileptic power supply in the campus and in the process, destroyed cars, water tanks and street lights before police fired teargas to stop them. Further checks revealed that the crisis that culminated in the closure of the campus began over a week ago when the Students’ Union Government locked up the classes, insisting that classes should not continue until the authorities fixed the electricity generator in the campus. But calm seemed to return in the campus after meetings with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Smart Uchegbu. An agreement that classes should be opened was reached which they did on Monday. However, the generator was unstable when it was switched on Monday, which led to the protests. In a memorandum issued on June 14, 2016 and signed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Enugu Campus, Professor Smart Uchegbu, the university authority stated, “This is to bring to the notice of the university community that in the light of the violent protest and monumental destruction of properties on 13th June, 2016, the Vice Chancellor has approved the implementation of immediate suspension of the Enugu campus students union government and closure of the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus indefinitely”

Very hot drinks are 'probably carcinogenic

(CNN)Anyone who likes to curl up with a steaming hot drink should consider letting some of that warmth subside; drinking it could increase their risk of developing cancer.
In a review published today by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the cancer agency of the World Health Organization, drinking very hot beverages was classified as "probably carcinogenic to humans."
More specifically, the review by a panel of global experts stated that drinking beverages at temperatures above 65 degrees Celsius -- 149 degrees Fahrenheit -- could cause people to develop cancer of their esophagus, the eighth most common form of cancer worldwide. Drinking tea, coffee or other hot beverages at this temperature can cause significant scald burns in the esophagus when they're consumed and has previously been linked to an increased cancer risk in this part of the body.
Warm beverages are not typically consumed this hot in Europe and North America but are commonly served at, or above, this temperature in regions such as South America, the Middle East and East Africa -- particularly when drinking teas. It's hotter than water coming out of sink faucets, which is typically no higher than about 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius), but not as hot as boiling water. Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius, or 212 degrees Fahrenheit.
The 65-degree Celsius temperature noted by the cancer research agency is enough to burn your tongue, and and according to the American Burn Association, skin contact with a liquid this hot can result in almost instantaneous burns if prolonged.

Getting hot

The findings come after a group of 23 international scientists analyzed all available data on the carcinogenicity of coffee, maté -- a leaf infusion consumed commonly in South America and other regions -- and a range of other hot beverages, including tea. They decided that drinks consumed at very hot temperatures were linked to cancer of the esophagus in humans.
The new classification puts consuming very hot drinks in the same risk group as exposure to substances such as lead, gasoline and exhaust fumes, which are also classified as "possibly carcinogenic" by the agency. Use of talcum powder on the perineal or anal regions of the body is also within this category.
Evidence for the findings was limited, but studies in China, Iran, Turkey and South America found positive associations between the risk of this form of cancer and temperatures at which drinks were consumed. Forms of tea, including the leaf infusion maté, are typically drunk at extremely high temperatures, above 158 degrees Fahrenheit (70 degrees Celsius) in these regions, according to the agency.
"These results suggest that drinking very hot beverages is one probable cause of esophageal cancer and that it is the temperature, rather than the drinks themselves, that appears to be responsible," said Dr. Christopher Wild, director of the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
Consumers in industrialized countries can stay calm, as they typically drink their beverages with less heat. "This is about 10 degrees [Celsius] higher than people in North America [and Europe] like their coffee," said Dana Loomis, deputy head of the monographs section at the cancer research agency that led the review.
Individually, coffee and maté did not have conclusive evidence for any cancer-causing effects when served at cool or warm temperatures, meaning the drinks themselves were not classified as carcinogenic.
Esophageal cancer was responsible for approximately 400,000 recorded deaths worldwide in 2012, about 5% of all cancer deaths.
Though smoking and drinking alcohol are major causes of esophageal cancer, particularly in high-income countries, the majority of cases globally for this form of cancer occur in parts of Asia, South America and East Africa.
"[Here], drinking very hot beverages is common, and the reasons for this high incidence of this cancer are not well-understood," Wild said.
The Tea Advisory Panel in the United Kingdom has responded to the classification by highlighting that tea is drunk at lower temperatures in the UK and that most people add milk.
"Tea drinkers in the UK can continue to enjoy tea in the traditional way with a drop of milk, which ensures that the temperature of tea sits within safe limits," said the panel's Tim Bond. "A study by UK burns doctors found that a cup of tea with 10 milliliters of milk cooled to less than 65 degrees Celsius within five minutes."

Re-classifying coffee

The International Agency for Research on Cancer classified coffee as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" in 1991, based on limited evidence, but the increased number of studies and evidence available since then led to its re-evaluation during the review.
The group analyzed more than 1,000 studies and decided there was inadequate evidence for any cancer-causing effects linked to drinking coffee itself, away from the temperature at which it is served.
The report stated coffee was "not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans."
"Many epidemiological studies showed that coffee drinking had no carcinogenic effects for cancers of the pancreas, female breast and prostate, and reduced risks were seen for cancers of the liver and uterine endometrium," the report said.
Evidence for any other cancers linked to drinking coffee was also inconclusive.
The National Coffee Association in the United States welcomed the new classification. "This is great news for coffee drinkers and confirms evidence from an avalanche of studies by highly respected and independent scientists," said National Coffee Association President Bill Murray. "Today, we can brew or buy a cup with even more confidence thanks to science."
The heat emanating from a coffee cup, or any hot drink, remains a risk, and previous studies have suggested an optimal drinking temperature of 136 degrees Fahrenheit (57.8 degrees Celsius) or below.

Consuming cancer

The findings come after a string of similar reports that link food and drink to cancer.
A 2015 study found that only 10% to 30% of cancers occur naturally in people's bodies, suggesting that most cancers are, in fact, a result of environmental factors.
In October, the WHO announced results from a report that linked people eating processed meat, such as sausages and ham, to cancer. Based on evidence from hundreds of studies, processed meat was classified as carcinogenic to humans.
Unprocessed red meat was classified as probably carcinogenic.
Recent studies have linked Western diets with increased risk of colon and prostate cancer. Men eating mostly a Western diet were found to have 2.5 times the risk of dying from prostate cancer. A Western diet is typically considered to be low in fiber and high in refined sugars, saturated fats and animal protein.
This week, the Environmental Working Group released findings that more than 400 known cancer-causing chemicals have been found in the bodies of Americans during research studies.

After a review of more than 1,000 biomonitoring studies, the group found that up to 420 chemicals known or likely to cause cancer have been detected in blood, urine, hair and other human samples. Nine of these was identified to be above safety limits assigned by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and posing non-trivial cancer risks in most Americans, according to the review.
"The presence of a toxic chemical in our bodies does not necessarily mean it will cause harm, but this report details the astounding number of carcinogens we are exposed to in almost every part of life that are building up in our systems," said Curt DellaValle, a senior scientist at the Environmental Working Group and author of the report. "At any given time, some people may harbor dozens or hundreds of cancer-causing chemicals. This troubling truth underscores the need for greater awareness of our everyday exposure to chemicals and how to avoid them."

Breaking: Finally, CBN to floats the Naira

Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele

By Emma Ujah, Abuja Bureau Chief
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Wednesday announced what it termed the “automatic adjustment mechanism of the exchange rate” in a flexible foreign exchange regime aimed at reducing the pressure on the Naira.
CBN has been under immense pressure to devalue the Naira for a while, which has been resisted by both the monetary and fiscal authorities, claiming that past devaluations did not benefit the economy- which is import dependent. Mr. Emefiele said, “The Central Bank of Nigeria has always maintained that it would continue to monitor situations on the ground and ensure that the Bank’s policies reflect these facts and developments rather than the sentiments of any groups or sectors.
“It is in light of this principle that we now believe that the time is right to restore the automatic adjustment mechanism of the exchange rate with the re-introduction of a flexible inter-bank exchange rate market. “The workings of this market will be consistent with the Bank’s objectives of enhancing efficiency and facilitating a liquid and transparent Foreign Exchange Market. Highlights of the flexible regime Under the new regime, Governor Enefiele said that the market would operate as a single market structure through the inter-bank/autonomous window Below are the highlights of the new regime: *The Exchange Rate would be purely market-driven using the Thomson-Reuters Order Matching System as well as the Conversational Dealing Book. *The CBN would participate in the Market through periodic interventions to either buy or sell FX as the need arises. *To improve the dynamics of the market, we will introduce FX Primary Dealers (FXPD) who would be registered by the CBN to deal directly with the Bank for large trade sizes on a two-way quotes basis. *These Primary Dealers shall operate with other dealers in the Inter-bank market, amongst other obligations that will be stipulated in the Foreign Exchange Primary Dealers (FXPD) Guidelines, which would also be released immediately after this Press Briefing. *There shall be no predetermined spread on FX spot transactions executed through the CBN intervention with Primary Dealers, while all FX Spot purchased by Authorized Dealers are transferable in the inter-bank FX Market. *The Forty-One (41) items classified as “Not Valid for Foreign Exchange” as detailed in a previous CBN Circular shall remain inadmissible in the Nigerian FX market. *To enhance liquidity in the market, the CBN may also offer long-tenored FX Forwards of 6 to 12 months or any tenor to Authorized Dealers In addition: *Sale of FX Forwards by Authorized Dealers to end-users must be trade-backed, with no predetermined spreads; *The CBN shall introduce non-deliverable over-the-counter (OTC) Naira-settled Futures, with daily rates on the CBN-approved FMDQ Trading and Reporting System. This is an entirely new product in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market, which would help moderate volatility in the exchange rate by moving non-urgent FX demand from the Spot to the Futures market; *The OTC FX Futures shall be in non-standardized amounts and different fixed tenors, which may be sold on any dates thereby ensuring bespoke maturity dates; *Proceeds of Foreign Investment Inflows and International Money Transfers shall be purchased by Authorized Dealers at the Daily Inter-Bank Rate; and *Non-oil exporters are now allowed unfettered access to their FX proceeds, which shall be sold in the Inter-bank market. Timelines *Selected FX Primary Dealers would be notified by Friday 17th June 2016. All other non-Primary Dealers would remain valid and eligible to participate in the market *Inter-bank trading under the new guidelines will begin on Monday 20th June 2016; and *The tenors and rates for the OTC Naira-settled FX Futures will be announced on Monday, June 27, 2016. Depleted foreign reserves The CBN, the governor said, had to take the measures sine the nation “witnessed a significant decline in our Foreign Exchange Reserves from about US$42.8 billion in January 2014 to about US$26.7 billion as of 10th June 2016. “In terms of inflows, the Bank’s foreign exchange earnings have fallen from about US$3.2 billion monthly to current levels of below a billion dollars per month.” He blamed the poor foreign exchange receipts on the over 70 percent drop in the price of crude oil, which contributes the largest share of our Foreign Exchange Reserves; Global growth slowdown and geopolitical tensions along critical trading routes in the world; and Normalization of Monetary Policy by the United States’ Federal Reserve. The CBN boss explained, “the interplay between reduced FX Supply and rising FX demand accounted for a substantial reduction in our foreign exchange reserves.” Mr. Emefiele, assured, however, that “Our Reserves, despite having fallen, is still robust and is able to cover about 5 months of Nigeria’s imports as against the international benchmark of 3 months.” He said that his team at the CBN would ensure transparency in the new regime and that there would be no place for speculators. His words, “Let me note that the Central Bank is strongly determined to make this market as transparent, liquid, and efficient as possible. Therefore, we would neither tolerate unscrupulous behaviour nor hesitate to bring serious sanctions on offenders. “The CBN expects all authorized dealers particularly to display the highest level of professionalism. We expect them to understand the spirit and letter of this transition to a market based system. The CBN will not allow the system to be undermined by speculators and rent-seekers. *Permit me to emphasize that any attempt to breach any aspect of this new framework will be heavily sanctioned by the CBN and this may indeed result in the suspension or withdrawal of the FX dealing license of an offending Authorized dealer.” The governor explained that the Primary Dealers would be about eight or ten and banks with the capacity to go to the market with as much as $10 million.
